Int’l monitors: RP polls marred by 3 G’s, cheating

Malacañang and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) appear to have failed in projecting to the international community that they had conducted fair, fraud-free, peaceful and orderly elections, as accredited international monitors yesterday told reporters that elections in the country were marred by bombings, intimidation, vote-buying and cheating.

Members of the group told reporters yesterday that they witnessed two bombings, encountered two armed groups and saw election rules being openly ignored.

Money to buy votes was handed out openly. “The transactions took place very blatantly. Our presence did not deter them at all,” said Mohamad Yunus Lebai Ali, a Malaysian lecturer and on.. Full Story »»»

PNP eyes two angles in torching of Batangas school

The Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday disclosed two angles are now being eyed on the torching of a school building in Taysan, Batangas, that killed a teacher and a poll watcher last Tuesday.

PNP chief Director General Oscar Calderon ordered a thorough investigation of the case and pursuit operations against the perpetrators behind the incident as Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jeslie Lapus called on police authorities to arrest the suspects.

Etihad is Cargo Airline of the Year

Etihad Airways has been awarded the prestigious title of Cargo Airline of the Year at the Air Cargo News awards in London.

Namfrel’s final tally shows San Pedro new Munti mayor

Incumbent Vice Mayor Aldrin San Pedro is now Muntinlupa City’s new mayor, beating his rival by more than 12,000 votes, according to the final tally of the National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) in Muntinlupa.

Based on the final Namfrel tally, San Pedro garnered 73,048 votes as against “Tita” Lor Fresnedi’s 60,821 or a difference of 12,227 votes. Fresnedi is the wife of Mayor Jaime Fresnedi.

Massive drug imports set next year — PITC

The government will be buying cheap essential drugs from India and Pakistan starting next year despite an unresolved patent battle against one of the world’s biggest drug maker.

State trading firm Philippine International Trading Corp. (PITC) said it has set the importation of the Pakistani-manufactured version of drug firm Norvasc once its patent ends in June next month. The patent of the drug is owned by multinational drug maker Pfizer Pharmaceutical Co.
