Public high school students taught Math the easy way

07/12/2007

The usually dreaded subject of Mathematics was made easy to some 900 public high school students from the Manila Science High School as they were the first to be taught the innovative training on mental Math problem solving techniques.

The training program, which was also showcased to mediamen who were invited to the event, was developed by the MSA Mental Math Techniques and will be implemented with the cooperation of the Department of Education (DepEd) through its Adopt-A-School Program.

In an interview after the presentation, Merle Alferez, MSA’s founder and director, expressed belief the implementation of these techniques in schools will surely improve the student’s capability on mental Math problem solving and can even be considered as a Math wizard.

Alferez said the MSA Mental Math Techniques is another breakthrough in teaching Mathematics, including computation of big numbers which can be done with tremendous speed and accuracy.

She added the technique is a product of years of experience, research and creativity of MSA, presently the only International Standards Organization (ISO) recognized training school.

She said these techniques, once mastered, will surely improve the country’s standing in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Studies (TIMSS).

The TIMSS ranked the Philippines No. 43 among the 45 countries they had evaluated earlier.

Alferez disclosed she intends to discuss the program to Education Secretary Jesli Lapus for its eventual inclusion for teaching to the regular basic education curriculum both in elementary and high schools.

Aside from developing and offering the techniques, the MSA also donated more than P250,000 worth of MSA Math textbooks, MSA English handbook and learning materials to Manila Science High School.
