Gloria orders review of PCGG execs’ performance

07/12/2007

Malacañang yesterday ordered an evaluation of the performances of Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) officials on the perception that they failed to secure vital ill-gotten wealth from the family of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos.

In a weekly press conference, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said it is still premature for them to comment on the proposed abolition of the PCGG without reviewing first the commission’s overall performance.

Ermita said only after a performance evaluation could they decide if the PCGG should be abolished.

“We need to have an evaluation first. Of course, there’s conflicting impressions on a body such as the PCGG. The call for abolition, from what I’ve heard, is caused by alleged failure to recover some ill-gotten wealth. So we need to evaluate the performance of the PCGG as a whole because when the President appointed its (PCGG) officials, she was confident that they would be able to do their jobs as mandated,” Ermita said.

Meanwhile, Malacañang yesterday announced the appointment of former Team Unity (TU) spokesman Antonio “Tonypet” Albano as Executive Director of the Office of the Political Coalition Affairs.

“Albano was given the rank of undersecretary,” Ermita said.

As this developed, Ermita said a total of 301 heads of government-owned and controlled corporations and government financial Institutions have already submitted their courtesy resignations as ordered by Mrs. Arroyo. Sherwin C. Olaes
