07/12/2007

Elements of the Philippine National Police rescued a kidnapped businessman and killed his four abductors, including a rogue policeman, in a raid on their hideout, officials said Wednesday.

Edgar Baroso was recovered unharmed in the police operation late Tuesday on a home in the outskirts of Davao City, Sr. Supt. Jaime Morente said.

The move to free the local businessman came three days after his abduction, he said.

Police operatives raided the suspects’ hideout at Block 7, Lot 29 Spring Valley Buhangin, Davao City to rescue gas station owner, Edgar Baroso, who was abducted on Sunday.

Police said the suspects were members of the notorious Balbacua Gang, a kidnap-for-ransom group.

The suspects reportedly refused to surrender and traded fire with the police prompting the operatives to fire back which resulted in the deaths of the kidnappers.

Two of the suspects were identified as former Army soldier Jessie Muwit and PO2 Jaime Telibangco who belonged to 3rd company of the regional mobile group. As of posting time, the two other slain suspects have yet to be named.

Police said Muwit was also tagged in the kidnapping of Filipino-Chinese businessman Winston Ho, but was released after the victim failed to file criminal charges against him. Gina Peralta-Elorde with AFP.
