04/26/2008

Taiwan firm Great Sun Optoelectronics is spending $30 million to put up a manufacturing plant inside the Clark Economic Zone to produce thin film transmission (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD).

Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila said proponents of the project, which would involve an initial cost of $5 million, have committed to hire five hundred to eight hundred workers in Clark in its first year of operation.

Favila added Great Sun also plans to tap a minimum of three local suppliers to complement its operations.

Great Sun plans to increase its investments to $30 million and its manpower requirements to 10,000 employees within three to five years, he added.

Great Sun specializes in the design and manufacture of monitors for computers, television sets and automobiles.

Great Sun developed a patented “Hi-View” TFT LCD the contrast and resolution of which is 40 percent to 60 percent sharper than similar brands in the market.

Great Sun distinguishes itself in the industry by its capacity to accept design and fabrication orders for a minimum of 200 units for original brand manufacture (OBM) clients.

According to Liberato Laus, President of Clark Development Corp., Great Sun Optoelectronics’ operation in the Philippines carries significant implications on Clark’s bid to become the premier logistics and overseas manufacturing hub for high technology products in the region. Ayen Infante
