Tap Hollywood to boost tourism, NZ advises — RP

A top official of the New Zealand tourism office has a piece of advice to the Philippine government on how to increase tourists arrivals: invite Hollywood filmmakers to shoot a film in any part of the country.
Stephen Hall, Tourism New Zealand chief executive, said Hollywood movies are proven effective flashpoint for nations wanting to increase tourist arrivals.
New Zealand is one of the nations that benefited from this strategy, attracting more than 10 million tourists a year since director Peter Jackson chose to film “Lord of the Rings” entirely in Auckland, Cairns and Christchurch, three most known areas in the country.
Tourists are so amazed to see the “Shire,” one of the most iconic settings of the movie, in the country. Shire is the setting where hobbits, the main characters in the “Lord of the Rings,” live and the center of the movie.
Since that movie, New Zealand tourism industry has grown tremendously. “The Shire is one of the most visited man-made structure in our country,” Hall told the Daily Tribune in a chance interview.
The effect of the movie to the industry of the country was so massive it two other sequels of the film were made there.
The official is in the country to sign three agreements to increases Philippine Airlines flight to Auckland to thrice a week. The MoU was also signed by the country’s new Prime Minister Jacinta Arden, the ambassador to the Philippines, and Hall.
Hall admitted his country only learned the potential of higher tourism revenues from Malaysia and Cambodia after the two nations did the same in the late 90s.
“If Malaysia succeeds, why can’t other countries like us and the Philippines,” the official added.
Malaysia was the location of the 1999 blockbuster “Entrapment.” The timing of the movie was perfect as it was about to enter a new millennium and Petronas tower was just finished at that time and its longest serving serving prime minister Mahathir Mohamad was about to step down.
The New Zealand official said timing for any significant event is very important in this strategy so that it will be inculcated to viewers’ mind.
He said Cambodia also benefited well after the big budget movie “Tomb Raider” was filmed in the iconic Ankor Wat territory of the former French colony.
“Ireland is benefiting a lot from ‘Game of Thrones,’” he added, referring to the movie now grabbing headlines around the world.
Hall said he knows that a number of Hollywood movies have been filmed in the Philippines either in full or in part and he is certain that the country will soon be put in the tourists’ map owing to the numerous attractions found here.
“I know your government has been doing a lot of effort to promote your country. Time will come the results will come out,” he said.
