MFI-FBI to host bamboo training program

03/09/2008

The MFI Farm Business Institute (MFI-FBI) at Jalajala, Rizal, will host a three-day training program on the rehabilitation of existing bamboo stands and nursery establishment in Rizal province.

From March 13 to 15, participants endorsed by the Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (MFARMC) will be educated on the proper care and management of bamboo as a natural resource with much business potential. Bamboo expert Romualdo Sta. Ana, president of the Philippine Bamboo Foundation, will be the event speaker.

“Bamboo abounds in the province of Rizal,” MFI-FBI manager Ma. Theresa Legiralde, said. “But it is a neglected resource. The productivity of existing natural stands is very low. The stands are overgrown and so many poles are small, bent, overaged, or dried and broken. Many shoots have dried and died due to neglect instead of being harvested for food.”

Sta. Ana is a leading bamboo expert working with Undersecretary Ed Manda of the Office of the President, to promote the planting and propagation of bamboo in the country.

MFI-FBI, an operating arm of MFI Foundation, Inc., aims to serve as a catalyst for developing agri-entrepreneurship by filling the gap in education in the agri-business sector. For more information about MFI visit www.mfi.gov.ph.
