How to know if the meat you’re buying is safe and fresh

08/10/2008

When buying meats, keep in mind the questions below and how Monterey — recently honored with “Top Retailer of the Year” award in 2007 by the Philippine Retailers Association and the Department of Trade and Industry — answers those needs:

How’s the meat? When buying high-quality lean meats, the signs to look for are beef and pork with few fat or white parts, meat that’s firm with fine-grained fiber and non-offensive smell. The quality of some meat is also best seen in terms of color, which is mainly influenced by age of the animal, species, sex, diet and even the exercise it gets. Meat from older animals is darker since myoglobin level increases with age. Other signs to look for are mouth-feel, texture and similar sensory attributes.

Does it offer variety? In every Monterey Meatshop, you’ll find a wide range of pork and beef cuts, from sinigang to New York steak and Hawaiian roast. Homemakers who must cook in a flash will also appreciate its timplado line that includes tapa, teriyaki and sukiyaki. Aside from meats, complementary products like Magnolia Fresh Milk and other dairy goods, vegetables, fish and shrimps as well as Magnolia Fresh Chicken and Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdogs are now also available in every one-stop Monterey Meatshops.

How do you rate the store? Monterey Meatshops provide a compact, cozy place where shoppers can imagine, and then decide on what food to serve the family. The place also has a modern meat fabrication equipment and display showcase. The staff is trained in the Monterey Meat School to handle meat products safely and to serve the suki professionally.

What’s behind the scene? Monterey currently has the country’s largest hog and cattle operation that’s equipped with the latest technology in feed milling, breeding, livestock-raising, slaughtering, meat retailing and processing. The meats undergo advanced blast-chilling process to neutralize bacterial growth. From breeding to meat storage, every step ensures the meats will reach your dinner table tender and disease-free.

Is it readily available? More and more households can now access world-class Monterey meats at reasonable prices through its network of franchises from Luzon to Mindanao. The Meatshop currently has more than 400 Monterey Meatshops conveniently located in your neighborhood and supermarkets nationwide.
