MOFYA Awards for OFWs
11/23/2008 The Model Overseas Filipino Worker’s (OFW) Family of the Year Award (MOFYA) is an annual event of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). Its objective is to give recognition to OFWs and their families who have demonstrated financial stability, steady and enduring family ties, outstanding community service. It was first conceptualized in 2003, the Year of the OFW Family and during the term of then OWWA Administrator and now Labor Secretary Marianito Roque. It started out as a component activity of the Department of Labor and Employment Labor Opportunities Program and OWWA’s Family Welfare Program for OFWs and their families but eventually evolved into a more prestigious event due to its significance and impact. The MOFYA focuses on OFWs and their families who have maintained strong family relations, properly harnessed the financial gains from the OFWs’ overseas employment, have educational achievements and exemplary performance in their respective professions, and at the same time have positive impact in the community where they reside. For 2008, MOFYA’s coverage is further expanded to have two national winners and 34 regional winners representing the land-based and sea-based sector in each of the country’s 17 regions. Also, special recognition and prizes will be given to the OFW families who will earn Outstanding Achievement in Community Projects Award and Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship Award. The national awarding ceremonies for MOFYA 2008 was recently held in SM Mall of Asia. In attendance were OWWA Administrator Carmelita Dimzon, Roque and with Vice President Noli de Castro as guest speaker, making MOFYA one of his important annual events in his busy calendar.
