Harnessing new energy sources has become a growing priority among organizations and companies as it not only helps cut on expenditure but preserves the environment as well. This scenario is best observed at Traders Hotel, Manila — the first in the Bay Area to make use of solar panels as early as 1995.
Sixty-four solar panels were installed at the hotel’s roof deck to harness solar energy and heat water for the guestrooms. Heat from the sun is absorbed by the panels which would then generate three kilowatts of power on an average sunny day (temperature of 30 to 33 degrees Celsius.) The energy generated will then be used to heat the water used in showers and faucets to an average of 50o to 65oC.
Based on the data gathered by Traders Hotel, Manila, carbon emissions have been reduced by 145 tons per year, saving over 110,000 kilowatt hours per year. The hotel is strongly committed in mitigating the impacts of climate change and sound resource-management practices as observed by Shangri-La’s corporate social responsibility program.
