Protecting more Pinays against cervical cancer

The Department of Health’s (DoH) efforts to reduce cervical cancer cases among women was recently reinforced in Davao, as the agency launched the Cervical Cancer Awareness Month themed “Babae, Mahalaga Ka! Magpa-Screen... NOW Na!” (Woman, You Are Priceless! Get Screened...At Once!) in Almendras Gym, Davao City. The event, held in partnership with non-government and private sector organizations such as the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society Foundation Inc., Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of the Philippines and Cervical Cancer Prevention Network, included talks on human papilloma virus (HPV) which is the leading cause of cervical cancer cases and the importance for young women to get HPV vaccinations. Over one thousand women were also screened for cervical cancer using the VIA (visual inspection using acetic acid) method. The DOH announced the expansion of its HPV immunization program to include more provinces, in order to increase the number of beneficiaries (9-year-old Grade IV girls in public schools) of its free quadrivalent HPV vaccines – vaccine that protects against the four strains of HPV.  From left, photos show program officers of Davao City Health Office together with the Department of Health officers; and Dr. Annabelle Yumang, assisitant regional director of the DoH.
