Drilon says RP pride restored under Noy

A staunch ally of the administration believes the Aquino government has restored the pride of the Filipino in the last three years as President Aquino entered the halfway mark of his leadership.
“Well, I think the first three years of the Aquino administration, to a great extent, we have restored the pride of the Filipino in our country. Especially outside, we have made them proud of our country once more,” Sen. Frankiln Drilon, who is expected to be the next Senate president, told a Senate forum.
Drilon has principally attributed his opinion to the adherence of the Aquino administration to the principles of good governance and to sound economic policies.
“These sound economic policies resulted in unprecedented growth last year and this year. The first quarter showing 7.8 percent growth in the GDP (gross domestic product),” the senator stressed.
Militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, however, had branded as a sham the economic growth under the Aquino administration.
Its statement came after government data showed that unemployment rate in the country is at a three-year high despite claims of a 7.8 percent GDP growth for the first quarter of the year.
“Despite the repeated claims of economic growth, our people remain mired in crisis. The chronic joblessness is just one of the problems created by our lack of economic sovereignty,” said Bayan.
Drilon said the sound economic policies have also resulted in the upgrading of tahe country’s investment grade from two international two rating agencies.
He added the adherence to the principle of good governance and good economic practice have resulted in record high approval and trust ratings on President Aquino.
“If you compare the last performance ratings of the past five presidents after Edsa, the present administration has the highest performance rating. It indicates the approval by the people of the reforms done by the President for three years,” he said.
The lawmaker said the high approval rating of the President also was reflected in the results of the last midterm elections where nine senatorial bets of Team PNoy won against three from opposition United Nationalist Alliance.
“This performance rating of SWS (Social Weather Stations) and result of the senatorial election would indicate the support and confidence on, of our people for the President. There is no better assessment than the assessment done by the people themselves,” Drilon stressed.
He added when Aquino said that the best is yet to come, it means there is still a need to do some more to make the Philippines a better nation before he steps down in 2016.
“It means that he is conscious that notwithstanding all that he has done for our country, there is still a need to do some more,” Drilon said.
According to the senator, Aquino is aware that there is still the unemployment rate which needs to be addressed and non-inclusive growth “because poverty is still there.”
“We still have to continue these reforms. What is important is that we have begun and the President has shown his political will to institute the necessary reforms. The enactment of the sin tax law was a reform that was 16 years late,” Drilon said.
In the upcoming 16th Congress, Drilon vowed to give priority to bills that would improve the investment climate in the country, rationalization of fiscal incentives, passage of amendments to the mining law and tax incentives monitoring and transparency act.
