Rody bares Loida Lewis’ role in ICC probe

President Duterte yesterday said he had heard a tapped conversation proving that New York-based Filipino-American businesswoman Loida Nicolas-Lewis is among those bankrolling the progress in the case hurled against him at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Talking to local officials in Cebu City on Monday evening, Duterte said that he obtained a recording of a talk between Lewis and another individual.
“I was already listening to the tapes of their conversation. It was provided to me by another country but the conversation was somewhere in Philippines and New York,” Duterte said
“Loida was one of them. And there was this, ‘See you in the headquarters when the case is filed,’” he added.
The President said he has been aware and has been expecting to receive the development of the case hurled against him before the international prosecuting body.
“I knew in advance. Problem is this case, for the looks of it, it’s old politics,” he said.
Back in 2016, Duterte assailed Lewis as the financier of an alleged destabilization plot against his administration by early 2017.

Married to the late African-American billionaire Reginald Lewis, the businesswoman was described in a 2015 New York Times article as “one of the richest philanthropists” in New York.
Also known as a civic leader, Nicolas-Lewis was cited by a local daily broadsheet before the May 9 elections as one of the active campaigners of the Liberal Party’s presidential and vice presidential tandem of Mar Roxas and Leni Robredo.
In a Facebook post, Lewis laughed off and denied Duterte’s allegation against her.
“Any supposed transcript of a recent phone conversation is bogus. ‘See you at the headquarters when the case is filed’ is laughable, because US Pinoys for Good Governance does not even have a headquarters! We use the Internet for communications and teleconference,” Lewis said.
Meanwhile, Duterte said he is willing to face the consequences of what his administration is doing once found guilty of the charges before the ICC.
“If I go to prison, I go to prison. If you want to execute me, look for a country that allows prisoners to be executed by firing squad. I can face the ICC. If they want to indict me and convict me, fine. I will gladly do it for my country,” Duterte said.
“I even tell them to find a place where they allow execution by firing squad. I would love to experience what Rizal experienced,” he added.
