Just like any other politician in the country, Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. yesterday admitted that he is also setting his sights on the presidency, not because he wants to follow in the footsteps of his father and namesake, the late President Ferdinand Marcos, or be the third former presidential child to assume the highest position in the country.
The issue of whether to seek the presidency in 2016, when his term of office expires, comes up every now and then, the senator said. “I’m very flattered whenever people consider me (as a possible contender for the presidency),” he told dzMM radio.
But when asked if the presidency is among his personal “visions,” Marcos was candid enough to admit that he’s no different from those in public office to aspire for the highest position, especially that of being the county’s leader.
“All those who are working aspire to reach the highest positions in their field. And I think, I’m one of them,” he said.
But the senator opted not to dwell on the matter, saying it’s too early to discuss plans when the next round of presidential elections is still three years away.
Besides, Marcos said, he’s just being practical especially with the unpredictable political landscape in the country, the three-year period could spell a difference depending on how the affairs of the government are being run by the incumbent leaders.
In 2010, Marcos won a seat in the Senate, placing seventh overall. Currently, he chairs the Senate committee on local government and the committee on urban planning, Housing and Resettlements, and is a member of several other committees.
