The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that Gener left 41 dead and affected 177,440 families or 800,944 people in 1,077 villages in 141 towns and 27 cities in 35 provinces.
Of these, 3,904 families or 16,514 people are being served in 104 evacuation centers.
Damage to property was estimated at P289,852,863.10, including P116,560,384 in infrastructure and P172,792,479.10 in agriculture.
As this developed, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration that
(Pagasa) said flash floods and landslides may threaten the western section of Luzon due to southwest monsoon while the a potential cyclone remains far from the country.
At present, due to continuous rains, Pagasa said yesterday at least five dams in Luzon opened their gates.
Pagasahydrologist Gine Nievares said as of 7:20 a.m., Ipo Dam in Bulacan opened one gate at a rate of 66.4 cubic meters per second.
Ipo Dam’s water level was 100.90 meters as of 6 a.m. yesterday. Its normal water level is 100.80 meters.
Nievares said Ambuklao and Binga dams in Benguet were still releasing water so as with San Roque Dam in Pangasinan and Magat Dam in Isabela.
Nievares said Ambuklao Dam on Saturday opened four gates by three meters each, while Binga Dam opened five gates with a total of four meters as the water levels in these dams were close to breaching their spilling levels.
As of 6 a.m. yesterday, the water level at Ambuklao Dam stood at 751.57 meters, 0.43 meters below the spilling level of 752.00 meters.
On the other hand, the water level at Binga Dam was at 573.49 meters, or 1.51 meters short of its spilling level of 575.00 meters.
Ambuklao and Binga dams’ water flow downstream to the San Roque Dam in Pangasinan which also opened one gate at 0.5 meters.
San Roque Dam’s water level was 282.38 meters. Its normal water level is 280.00 meters.
Nievares also said Magat Dam in Isabela opened two gates by three meters and as of 6 a.m. Yesterday. Its water level was 190.77 meters. Its normal water level is 190.00 meters.
She added that the operators of the said dams had informed residents that the gates of the dams were opened as it warned of possible flashfloods and landslides.
Meanwhile, La Mesa Dam in Novaliches, Quezon City remained on “red alert” status as its water elevation nears the spilling level, according to Nievares.
As of 6 a.m. yesterday, Nievares said the water level was at 79.78 meters, or 0.37 meters short of the spilling level of 80.15 meters.
She said they will only remove the red alert status once its water level dips to 79.50 meters.
Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said 40 families or 200 people were affected after strong winds caused big waves that hit Sitio Tinago in Tibpuan village in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.
At least 10 houses were destroyed while 30 more were damaged.
Of the affected population, 20 families or 99 people were brought to a nearby evacuation center.
The NDRRMC said the death toll from Typhoon Gener (Saola) rose further to 41 early yesterday.
Some 68 roads and bridges had been affected by the cyclone.
NDRRMC head Benito Ramos said one of the most recent fatalities was Mica Hufana, 2, who was playing in La Union when she drowned.
Ramos said many areas were still flooded, including some parts of Bulacan and Bataan in Central Luzon, Valenzuela City in Metro Manila, and Cavite as of press time.
The NDRRMC said at least four people remained missing while 35 were injured.
Reports said Valladolid town in Negros Occidental was declared under a state of calamity.
Also declared under such state were Lauan and Culasi towns in Antique province.
Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development has allotted P43.82 million for the affected areas, with P4.77 million as standby fund and P39.04 million for relief supplies.
The low pressure area was spotted at 1,170 km east of Northern Luzon (17.0°N, 135.0°N).
Weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said they continue to monitor the LPA, which may be codenamed “Helen” once it enters Philippine territory and becomes a cyclone.
Aurelio said southwest monsoon was affecting Luzon including Metro Manila so these areas can still expect sudden heavy rain. Western Visayas and Mindanao will experience good weather.
In its advisory, Pagasasaid Luzon and Visayas will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rain over the western section of Luzon which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.
“Residents living in low lying areas and along mountain slopes are advised to be on alert for possible occurrence of flash floods and landslides,” Pagasa said.
Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
Moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail throughout the archipelago and the coastal waters will be moderate to rough.
Pagasa also issued gale warning indicating strong to gale-force winds that is expected to affect the seaboards of Luzon and Visayas.
Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves.
