IN/SIGHT: Why Katie
is against Scientology
“Have you ever decided you did not like some member of your family?” “Have you ever lied to a teacher?” “Have you ever refused to obey an order from someone you should obey?” These are some of the questions asked during the interrogation of would-be members of the Church of Scientology, according to some ex-members.
The process is called “sec checking,” from which Katie Holmes, the Hollywood actress who recently divorced Tom Cruise, desperately wanted to save only daughter Suri.
She feared Tom would drag Suri through the same process, one of the reasons she broke from the Church she is steadfastly against, and ultimately Tom. Katie revealed she had witnessed in 2005 Tom’s other children join the Scientology ritual she found troubling.
Here’s how it works. The subject holds electrode handles on a device called an e-meter and is then asked a series of personal questions that help the Church locate “areas of spiritual distress.” During the process, a person called an “auditor” collects e-meter readings.
