The OMG in the Yahoo OMG Awards

It might be considered as the country’s version of the US People’s Choice Awards, but in the Philippine context, the Yahoo OMG Awards, held recently at the cavernous SM MoA Arena, is “power of the people” come to life anew.
The victors in the various categories were chosen via the most number of text and email votes. The winners, of course, were not necessarily enlightened, but the awards serve as a credible indicator of who really is “hot” in the fields of radio, TV and film.
The whole ceremony was sleek and fast, production values topnotch, and yes, a “purple carpet” was definitely a novelty against the usual red carpet walk.
There were, however, several aspects of the Yahoo OMG Awards that were, for lack of a better term, oh-my-god-awful. Perhaps a concept “rethink” is needed?
To begin with, the hosting skills of  Kapuso celebrities Raymond Gutierrez, Solenn Heussaff and Isabelle Daza were below par, being cue-card dependent. Nothing about their chatter was natural or engaging. Despite the haute couture that they wore, they failed to hold this correspondent’s interest.
And, please, let artists who can actually sing perform the numbers!
Another OMG moment, one-named rocker Franco had a solo number, described by Solenn as “sexy” when nobody, as in nobody, knew the dude. He was nowhere near deserving of the adjective. Also, Urbandub was not pleasurable to the ears, and the duet by Sam Concepcion, a Kapamilya heartthrob and Julie Anne San Jose, a Kapuso ingénue, did not deliver the oomph.
Celebrities who got the most shrieks were Coco Martin, who was proclaimed Actor of the Year; Kim Chiu, Xian Lim, Daniel Padilla and Vice Ganda.
Angel Locsin walked away with the Actress of the Year.
The biggest Star Magic love team of late Kim Chiu and Xian Lim were proclaimed the Breakthrough Actor and Breakthrough Actress awards, respectively.
Anne Curtis bagged the Celebrity of the Year award. The Philippines’ answer to Angelina Jolie was in Portugal and sent a video message to Yahoo! Philippines OMG!
The Star for all Seasons, Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto, earned the Major Impact award. Winning by 101,827 votes, she bested the late Comedy King Dolphy, superstar Nora Aunor, megastar Sharon Cuneta and Titanic action superstar and senator Bong Revilla.
