Innovative MRI and CT scan systems
Healthcare professionals can now save more lives, detect cancers earlier and offer better, personalized treatment with the latest medical imaging technology in the Philippines, launched to the Filipino medical community during the CT and MRI User's Conference held recently in Mactan, Cebu. The conference was the first of its kind in the Philippines that brings together clinicians, radiographers, medical professionals and key opinion leaders to discuss the latest clinical and technical advances in CT or computed tomography and MRI or magnetic resonance imaging, which have long been relied on by the medical community to diagnose diseases and detect cancers. The Philips-powered MRI, CT and iDose technologies unveiled at the conference allow precise, efficient and optimal medical imaging.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound at Healthway Medical Fil-Am Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran and Alliance mixed martial arts (MMA) trainer Brandon Vera recently visited Healthway Medical Market! Market! and Shangri-La branches to have his injured hand checked. The injury resulted from recent intensive training for an MMA competition. He was advised by a Healthway doctor to undergo musculoskeletal ultrasound, a noninvasive medical test that captures real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissue throughout the body. This procedure enables physicians to view, diagnose and properly treat cases such as abnormalities of muscles and soft tissue masses, tendon tears, dislocations, bleeding or other fluid collection in muscles and joints, and benign or malignant soft-tissue tumors.

Manage dengue with proper hydration
Loss of fluid is more rapid when we have fever or experience vomiting and diarrhea. That is why patients diagnosed with dengue, a mosquito-borne infection which leads to a flu-like illness, are reminded of the importance of hydration. Dengue patients are described to feel an abrupt onset of high fever accompanied by severe frontal headache, pain behind the eyes which worsens with eye movement, muscle and joint pains, loss of sense and taste and appetite, measles-like rash over chest and upper limbs, nausea and vomiting. With no treatment available to cure the disease, patients are treated with Paracetamol to bring down the fever and this is supported with sufficient supply of fluids. Keeping the body hydrated manages the disease and keeps it from getting worse and advancing to dengue hemorrhagic fever or the complicated stage, when the blood vessels start to leak and cause bleeding.
Water, unfortunately, is not enough. The fluid lost by the body is composed of water and ions, and should also be replaced by the same. Pocari Sweat, an ion supply drink brought to the Philippine market by Otsuka (Philippines) Pharmaceutical Incorporated (OPPI) is an ideal fluid replacement. Aside from water, it contains the right amount of electrolyte minerals such as magnesium, sodium, potassium and calcium. These are the same minerals found in our body's natural fluid and the combination of these minerals allows the timely absorption of replacement fluid which is critical to prevent spontaneous dehydration.

Vaccine against pneumonia
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval for pneumococcal conjugate vaccine 13 (PCV13) as a single dose for use in adults. PCV13 is indicated for adults 50 years of age and older for active immunization for the prevention of pneumonia and invasive disease caused by the 13 Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) serotypes contained in the vaccine.
Pneumococcal disease, including pneumonia, in adults 50 years and older, represents a significant personal and societal health burden. Pneumococcal disease is a leading public health problem in adults worldwide, causing an average of over 800,000 deaths per year. In the Philippines, pneumonia is the leading cause of morbidity and the fifth leading cause of mortality. According to Philhealth, in 2010, in-patient claims for pneumonia totaled to 295,390, which amounts to over P2 billion. For the first half of 2011, Philhealth claims reached nearly 80,000, which is equivalent to P1.2 billion.
