Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz has encouraged graduating high school students to consider taking architecture if it was their inclination and if they wished to easily land a job after college.
An architect is a hard-to-fill occupation identified in the DoLE study, Project JobsFit: The DoLE 2020 Vision, conducted by through the Bureau of Local Employment.
The 101 Career Guides based on the findings of the report requires an architect to have a professional degree in architecture and, prior to taking the licensure examination, a period of practical training and internship.
He must have the skills and competencies to communicate ideas to clients; conceptualize and understand spatial relationship’ artistic and drawing ability; excellent communication skills; computer literacy knowledge of computer aided design and drafting (CADD); strong organizational skills with attention to details; including managerial and supervisory skills.
“Having these credentials, an architect may receive salary that ranges from P18,000 to P40,000 a month depending on the type of employer,” Baldoz said. “And if they are employed in other countries, such as the Middle East, they could receive a monthly salary of between $1,500 to $3,000.”
“With the recent trend of outsourcing to local architectural firms the drafting of construction plans from foreign countries and the unprecedented growth in the business process outsourcing industry in the Philippines, demand for this profession will also increase,” Baldoz said.
With the tourism boom spurring construction growth, out-of-school youths may consider training for a job as a rigger, the DoLE chief further said. A rigger helps operate machines that move heavy objects, Baldoz said.
