At least 578 stray dogs and cats were impounded by the Caloocan City Veterinary Office in its ongoing campaign against rabies, Mayor Enrico “Recom” Echiverri said over the weekend.
Based on the report he and Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas president Councilor Ricojudge “RJ” Echiverri, 578 stray animals were caught from Jan. 1 to June 30 this year.
The animals were brought to the Animal Pound in Camarin, also in the city, where they will stay until their owners claim them.
In claiming the animals, owners are required to pay P150 to the City Animal Pound and an additional P50 for the succeeding days, the city’s veterinary office said.
If the owners have not claimed the animals in five days, the City Veterinary Clinic will set the animals for adoption.
The city chief executive said the impounding of animals would help prevent the spread of rabies in the city.
He added the campaign will also keep the city clean and avoid dirt pollution or unpleasant smell which the animals may bring.
“Let’s be responsible pet-owners by taking care of our pets,’’ the mayor said, adding the local government regularly holds free anti-rabies campaign.
Since January to July of this year, some 6,755 pets were given free anti-rabies shots by the City Veterinary Office.
He said the number of beneficiaries is expected to increase with the ongoing anti-rabies drive.
