Several public elementary and high schools near the Batasan Complex have been allowed to suspend classes tomorrow to minimize traffic congestion when President Aquino delivers his State of the Nation Address (Sona) before a joint session of Congress.
Quezon City schools division superintendent Corazon Rubio was the one who issued the authorization memorandum to concerned local school administrators, said Greg Bañacia, chief of the city’s Public Affairs and Information Services Office (PAISO).
However, in order to catch up with the “lost day,” the affected schools can have Saturday classes, she said.
“In replacement to the suspension of classes, Saturday classes will be held,” Rubio said.
The schools affected by the suspension tomorrow are: Commonwealth Elementary School, Pres. C. Aquino Elementary School, Doña Juana Elementary School, Holy Spirit Elementary School, Lagro Elementary School, North Fairview Elementary School, Bagong Silangan Elementary School, Culiat Elementary School, New Era Elementary School, Melencio Castelo Elementary School, Payatas B and C Elementary Schools, Payatas B Annex Elementary School, Lupang Pangako Elementary School, San Diego Elementary School, Fairview Elementary School, Benigno Aquino Elementary School, Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School and West Fairview Elementary School.
For secondary schools, these are: Commonwealth High School, Batasan Hills National High School, Judge Feliciano Belmonte High School, Holy Spirit National High School, Lagro High School, North Fairview High School, Bagong Silangan High School, Culiat High School, New Era High School.
For his part, Mayor Herbert “Bistek” Bautista, said the suspension of classes in the schools near the House of Representatives was just proper so students as well as school personnel will not contribute to traffic congestion in the area.
The move will also help law enforcement agencies specifically the Quezon City Police District to ensure security in the area during the President’s Sona, according to Bautista.
Bautista and other key city officials are expected to attend the historic event at the Batasan.
