Alcala acts to ensure farmers
will have good harvest
Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala has alerted all the regional offices to monitor all the farm lands in the country during typhoon season to help farmers who were badly stricken by calamities to recover from their losses. In a statement, Alcala stressed that he has directed all its regional and provincial offices to identify areas which were affected by typhoon particularly flooding. “We have to ensure that all their farm lots were protected from any calamities to assure that farmers will have good harvest season,” Alcala said. Alcala also instructed his officials to help those farmers affected by typhoon even in the far-flung areas. “Those affected by typhoon can also go to our provincial offices to seek assistance and to recover from their losses,” Alcala said adding that they are also providing free seedlings and other materials needed for affected farmers. For his part, administrator Antonio Nangel, of the National Irrigation Administration said apart from farm lands, they are also monitoring all the dams and irrigation systems during typhoon season in the country to identify areas that can be affected by flooding. “We are closely monitoring all the dams and irrigation system to alert and inform the farmers of possible overflowing of dams and possible flooding in the farm lots,” Nangel explained. Alcala and Nangel said, they are doing this to make sure that the country’s target for food sufficiency by 2016 before the end of President Aquino’s term will be met accordingly. “The Aquino administration has a promise to end hunger by 2016 and we are dead serious to accomplish this,” Alcala said.
