Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista has ordered an inspection of all local schools, especially those that are located in flood-prone areas, to determine their structural integrity and stability after days of torrential rains that inundated most parts of Metro Manila.
In a directive, Bautista tasked city engineer Joselito Cabungcal to conduct an assessment, including the extent of damage to school properties in order for the city government to undertake remedial and retrofitting measures the soonest possible time.
“The safety of our schoolchildren will continue to remain as the city’s primordial concern,” according to the city chief executive.
City schools Superintendent Corazon Rubio, in a report submitted to the city engineering department, had placed at P3.4 million the damage wrought by last week’s heavy rains and floods to school properties.
In the elementary level, San Bartolome Elementary School was hardest hit, damaging four classrooms at the administration building and school fixtures and furniture.
The heavy rains also damaged the SB and Mathay Halls of Carlos Albert High School in Barangay Santol. Engineer Segundo Escaro, in his report to Rubio, placed at P1.59 million the damage to school properties at Carlos Albert High School.
Rubio also cited damage to school properties at Masambong Elementary School, President Corazon C. Aquino Elementary School, Masambong High School, Sergio Osmeña Sr. High School, North Fairview High School, Doña Rosario High School, Sta. Lucia High School and Pugad Lawin High School.
Flooding was also reported in Bagbag Elementary School, Mines Elementary School and C.P. Garcia High School.
Meanwhile, the city school division has identified at least 23 QC schools as being flood-prone.
These are Masambong High School, Masambong Elementary School, Sergio Osmeña Sr. High School, E. Rodriguez Sr. Elementary School, North Fairview Elementary School, West Fairview Elementary School, Carlos Albert High School, Betty Go-Belmonte Elementary School, Dr. Josefa Jara Martinez High School, Diosdado Macapagal Elementary School, Carlos P. Garcia High School, Bagbag Elementary School, San Bartolome Elementary School, Mines Elementary School, Doña Rosario High School, Doña Rosario Elementary School, Sta. Lucia High School, San Gabriel Elementary School, San Antonio Elementary School, Bagong Silangan Elementary School, Bagong Silangan High School and Fairview Elementary School.
Aside from local schools, Bautista also directed Cabungcal to assess the damage to other public infrastructure projects in the city, especially rip-rap, drainage and roads.
He instructed the city engineer to coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Highways and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority for river ways and embankment repairs. Arlie O. Calalo
