Brillantes to look into electoral protest case in Taguig

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes has decided to look into status of the electoral protest in Taguig City.
This is the first time the poll body chief has spoken of the case, as he inhibited himself from the electoral case since he was the former lawyer of the petitioner of the case, retired Associate Justice Dante Tinga.
“I want it reviewed because before, I don’t meddle in the case of his (Tinga’s) wife because I inhibited, but now I will look into the status,” he said.
Tinga filed the petition seeking for a recount of the votes in the May 2010 polls, respondent on the case is Taguig Mayor Ma. Laarni Cayetano.
Cayetano beat Tinga in the 2010 mayoral race by a mere 2,420 votes.
Meanwhile, the Comelec First Division, headed by Commissioner Rene Sarmiento, has ordered the decrypting of the May 2010 results of the mayoralty race in Taguig.
He said the process of decrypting is by using the picture image of the ballot in the recount proceedings.
“The process is if there is a protest we look at the ballots, and then if there’s a question, we then look at the picture image,” Brillantes said.
The Comelec has ordered to start the recount in the Taguig mayoral race in the May 2010 polls but failed several times to retrieve the ballot boxes from the Taguig City Hall due to the barricade of supporters of the incumbent mayor.
