The House committee on energy headed by Batanes Rep. Henedina Abad earned the ire of some lawmakers for allegedly sitting on a bill to amend the Oil Deregulation Law (ODL).
According to Zambales Rep. Mitos Magsaysay, the bill has been pending before the Abad committee for the past two years and it has not moved ever since.
Magsaysay said that the bill should have been calendared for plenary debates a long time ago.
The Zambales lawmaker made the statement following the recent oil price increases that amounted to almost P2 per liter.
She said that the delay in the approval of the bill is an additional burden for the Filipinos now reeling from devasting rains and typhoons.
“That’s an extra load on all of us,” the lady lawmaker said. She added that in the light of an impending water rates increase in September the consumers would have to tighten their belts further.
Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone, for his part, lambasted the oil companies for being remiss in their social responsibilities.
Evardone said that it is high time for the government to take bold steps in curbing the alleged abuses of the oil companies whose only aim is profit.
Evardone posited that there is an urgent need for the government to regulate the oil industry.
Under the current ODL, oil companies have the right to increase their prices without approval from the government.
