A bird strike forced a Philippine Airlines (PAL) plane to cancel its return flight to Manila after a number of the birds were sucked by the plane’s engine before landing at the Zamboanga International Airport.
PAL flight PR 124 which was scheduled to depart at 6:55 a.m. from Zamboanga to Manila was cancelled after its engine showed indications of a bird strike during aircraft inspection prior to departure, PAL announced.
The bird strike incident was believed to have occurred during the preceding flight that left Manila at 4:43 a,m. yesterday.
The cancelled PR 124 flight, an Airbus a319 carrying 101 passengers, will remain grounded until further notice. Passengers were transferred to other PAL and Airphil flights from Zamboanga to Manila.
According to the Manila International Airport Authjority, during the first half of 2012, 39 bird strike incidents had already been recorded by the safety division of the airport, almost a 50 percent increase from the incidents recorded the previous year.
Data show a total of 39 strikes have already been reported by various air carriers from January to July this year.
