Isabela Vice Gov. Rodito Albano dared Local Governments Secretary Jesse Robredo to name the mayor from the province whom he said would be among those to be charged with illegal logging.
“I think we deserve to be informed of the identity of this mayor so as not to cast aspersions on all of our mayors. We have not been informed of this,” Albano said.
Earlier, Robredo said the government would file illegal logging cases against eight mayors, most of them from Agusan del Sur in Mindanao, but also allegedly including an unnamed mayor from Isabela.
The DILG chief was reported as saying that the accused mayors should explain why they should not be suspended.
This came as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Cagayan Valley was stepping up its campaign against illegal logging in the region in consonance with the President’s moratorium on logging.
According to reports, some 62 people in the region have been convicted of illegal logging since the beginning of the year, with 22 heavy equipment confiscated.
“This is to show that the government is dead serious in its drive against illegal logging syndicates,” said forester Benjamin Tumaliuan, DENR regional executive director.
