The reproductive health bill, energetically pushed by progressive women legislators, is about to be doomed for the nth time since the past several Congresses.
House majority leader Neptali Gonzales II revealed that even Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile was convinced that the measure, opposed by the Catholic Church, may not be able to see the light of day.
Gonzales was alluding to the meeting between the Enrile and House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. who talked about Congress’ legislative agenda for the third regular session, which will start on July 23.
“The Senate President admitted to Speaker Belmonte that the RH bill faces strong opposition among senators, it will have a hard time,” said Gonzales.
While the bill is also experiencing the same problem at the House of Representatives, Gonzales said the leadership will continue to discuss the proposal.
“We will continue our deliberations here, we will work until we set the voting for this,” he said.
Gonzales stressed that some allies in the majority who are also ranking leaders of the House of Representatives have been opposing it, including Deputy Speaker and Cebu Rep. Pablo Garcia and Parañaque Rep. Roilo Golez.
