Six rebels and one militiaman were reported killed while one was wounded after 40 New People’s Army (NPA) fighters attacked a detachment in Barangay Banag-Banag, Sibagat town, Agusan del Sur yesterday morning.
Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo showed that more or less 40 NPA rebels harassed a Cafgu detachment in Barangay Banag-Banag at around 5 a.m.
During the series of attacks, militiaman Elan Vincolado was killed while his companion Edwin M. Cempron was wounded.
However, two MG529 attack helicopters were dispatched, along with military ground troops, to support the militiamen.
“While military troops were sent to the area, a couple of MG520 attack helicopters responded to give fire support to the detachment. Reports reaching this headquarters showed that at least six NPAs were killed in the encounter,” the report said.
There was no reported casualty on the Army side.
The 4th Infantry Division spokesman also said that the government forces in Barangay Banag-Banag were not surprised by the rebel assault as they have been receiving information about NPA movements from intelligence and civilian sources.
Bongosia said that the attack aims to eliminate the militia detachment in the area so that the NPAs can conduct their extortion activities unmolested.
