The Department of Justice (DoJ) will be more active in the electoral sabotage case filed against former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo once her trial begins.
This was the statement made by DoJ Secretary Leila de Lima yesterday after the joint meeting held at the DoJ with the officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
De Lima said that although the Comelec was the lead prosecutor in the case, the DoJ will be more active in handling the case.
If the court would not grant the motion for reconsideration they filed, De Lima said, the joint prosecution panel of the Comelec and the DoJ will then focus in preparing for the pre-trial which is scheduled in August.
The joint meeting was held a day after Pasay City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 112 Presiding Judge Jesus Mupas granted the petition for bail filed by Mrs. Arroyo.
But the government’s poll sabotage case against former President Arroyo was likened by Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano to a patient already in an intensive care unit (ICU) already in a deathbed.
“I’m just saying the whole situation is going from bad to worse. But definitely, the administration cannot afford to allow the former president to get off. That would be an injustice (to the casualties) of these two elections,” he added while emphasizing the need for both the Comelec and the DoJ to have the political will in pursuing the case. With PNA
