The Department of Education (DepEd) said at least eight schools in eight regions affected by heavy rain and flooding in the past several days are still under water.
Rizalino Rivera, DepEd undersecretary for regional operations, said they will let local chief executives or school heads decide whether to resume classes in affected schools on Monday.
Rivera did not name the schools but indicated they were located in Metro Manila, Cordillera, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central and Southern Luzon and Western Visayas.
He also said at least 244 schools are still being used as evacuation centers.
Several days of heavy rain and floods had forced the suspension of classes and work in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
Rivera said they will aim for normalcy when school resumes on Monday, though he said it will depend on the condition of the schools. He said what was important was that learning sessions will resume.
But he said there will also be play therapy in some schools for students psychologically affected by the floods.
Rivera also cited some schools in Laguna where evacuees would be asked to leave the classrooms during the day so classes can be held.
Meanwhile, Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara has filed a bill seeking to include the teaching of disaster awareness and mitigation in elementary and high school curricula.
Angara said House Bill 460, which aims to instill disaster awareness and promote active participation of the students, will help minimize loss of life and property damage during natural disasters.
“It’s about time that we become anticipatory, not just reactionary in preparing for disasters,” Angara pointed out.
If passed into law, Angara’s measure will include a course in natural and man-made disasters in order to equip and prepare the young ones in anticipating hazards and calamities. By Jason Faustino and Charlie V. Manalo
