The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) yesterday disclosed that landslides occurred in San Joaquin town, Iloilo province on Thursday night and Friday morning because of recent heavy rains and earthquakes.
According to the NDRRMC report yesterday morning, the landslides happened at about 9:45 p.m. of Thursday and 5:45 a.m. of Friday.
The NDRRMC is still verifying if there were injured residents in the area, while the Department of Public Works and Highways is clearing the roads.
The council also said officials of Lopez Vito, Qui-anan and Tiolas villages in San Joaquin in Iloilo directed commuters passing through the Iloilo-Antique road to take alternate routes in Barangay Tiolas.
As this developed, the NDRRMC has been on red alert since Friday following a report that tropical storm “Lawin” continues to gain strength as it moves towards Samar and Bicol.
Public storm signal number 1 remains hoisted over Eastern Samar. Because the storm is still over water, there is a possibility that it may intensify into a typhoon by Saturday, the council said.
Rains and gusty winds should be expected over Samar provinces, while moderate to heavy rains may prevail over Cordillera, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon.
The regions of Metro Manila, Mimaropa, Calabarzon, Bicol and Western Visayas as well as Mindanao, meanwhile, will have occasional light to moderate rains and thunderstorms.
