Jose Rizal University is lucky to have Nate Matute in the team.
The high-leaping, USA-born Matute scored 30 points and was almost there when needed most as the Heavy Bombers drubbed Emilio Aguinaldo College, 90-79, to remain unbeaten in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Arena in San Juan City yesterday.
Matute struck hardest from the three-point area, sinking seven, including back-to-back that bailed the Heavy Bombers out of harm in a prolific game long performance that effectively carried the team to its third straight win in as many starts.
The Generals tumbled to their first loss after hurdling their first assignment this season — a 75-72 win over Arellano University last June 25.
The Generals were very much in the game for three quarters. They even moved within 59-60 early in fourth, while staying within striking distance at 62-66, on Cedric Benjamin Happi’s triple.
But Matute came through with two straight triples in a quick retaliation that restored the Heavy Bombers’ double-digit lead, 72-62.
As if that was not enough, the Heavy Bombers even dropped a 13-7 scoring binge behind Israel Camasura and John Lopez and Matute to post an insurmountable 86-69 lead.
