Llamados turn back Kings, gain playoff berth for finals

Game Today (Araneta)
8 p.m. — Talk ‘N Text vs Rain or Shine

Marc Pingris dominated with 24 points and 13 rebounds as B-Meg outgunned Barangay Ginebra, 82-70, last night that assured the Llamados a playoff shot at the Finals of the Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Pingris knocked in six points in a pivotal 22-10 breakaway that gave the Llamados more breathing room at 70-55 after a slim 48-45 lead. That was all the cushion they needed in fending off the Gin Kings’ spirited bid for a rally on their way to their ninth win in 13 games, good enough to assure them of at least a tie for the second Finals berth.
The Gin Kings, who reeled from the sub-par game of leader Mark Caguioa, dropped their first game in the semis after a hot three-game run but nevertheless kept themselves in the running for the Finals.
They can still avail of the tournament’s 4-of-5 incentive with a win in their last semis outing against Talk ‘N Text on Friday.
The battle for survival continues today when Rain or Shine tries anew to snare the first Finals berth when the Elasto Painters face Talk ‘N Text, the only other remaining team in contention, at 8 p.m. also at the Cubao arena.
The Elasto Painters are still leading the pack with a 9-3 win-loss record despite losing two of their three semis assignments. They need only to win once to reach the unassailable 10-win plateau and a place in the best-of-seven Finals.
The Tropang Texters’ 7-5 overall record does not matter now as they are leaning on their 2-1 experience in the semis to propel them into the Finals via the tournament’s 4-of-5 incentive. They need to sweep their last two assignments to avail of that incentive which will reward them with a playoff for the last Finals berth.
