Arellano University drew firepower from John Pinto to clobber University of Perpetual Help Dalta System, 63-54, in the 88th NCAA men's basketball tournament yesterday at The Arena in San Juan.
Pinto, a rookie playmaker from Davao, fired seven of his 15 points in the fourth period to go with 13 rebounds and six assists to help the Chiefs overcome another slow start en route to their third win in eight games.
The Altas, meanwhile, fell to second spot with a 6-3 win-loss card, two games behind heavyweights San Beda College and San Sebastian College, which is battling Mapua Institute of Technology at press time.
"The boys responded to the challenge," said Arellano coach Koy Banal, obviously elated as his wards finally arrested their two-game losing skein.
"We played a very horrible game against San Sebastian. We were beaten black and blue, but our guys stepped up and went for the win. We won this game because our boys wanted it more," Banal added.
Jett Vidal, the cold-blooded marksman of Altas coach Aric del Rosario, notched 13 points, but his deadly assault was nowhere to be found in the final canto where the Chiefs totally reigned supreme.
"We played terrific defense on him (Vidal) down the stretch," added Banal, who drew 11 points and 12 boards from Prince Caperal.
