MACAU — The sale of Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc. (CCBPI)'s Powerade franchise to Mikee Romero is sure to be resolved on Friday, in time for the PBA Rookie Draft three days later.
This was announced by PBA commissioner Chito Salud here Saturday following his overseas phone call with franchise buyer Mikee Romero of Sultan 900 Capital Inc.
"Mr. Romero said they will present the papers on the deed of assignment to our office on Wednesday and we will have a special board meeting on Friday to resolve the issue," said Salud.
The sale was supposed to be tackled during the PBA Board's directional meeting at the Capri Room of The Venetian-Macau here Friday, but was deferred due to the lack of the papers attesting to the sale between CCBPI and Sultan.
"Mr. Romero expressed regret they were not able to present the needed papers earlier because of the torrential monsoon rains the past few days, but he assured me they will be there by Wednesday," added Salud.
"Once the deed is there and we have deemed them to be in order, then we will call for a meeting for the franchise transfer to be approved. But it also must garner two-thirds or seven votes of all the governors."
Should Sultan make it through, it will carry the moniker Batang Pier and acquire a Tigers team that has scoring machine Gary David, ace point guard Jayvee Casio and also owns at least the No. 10 overall pick in the draft.
It will also mean Romero, a businessman deeply involved in sports, especially basketball, will fulfill a self-admitted lifelong dream of owning a PBA franchise.
