Unleashing its deadly form very early in the meet, Energen Pilipinas crushed a hapless Saudi Arabia side, 95-52, on Friday to open its campaign in the 22nd Fiba-Asia men’s U18 Championship on a high note at the Buyant-Ukhaa Arena in Ulan Bator, Mongolia.
Kyle Suarez paced the Nationals with 15 points, five rebounds and three steals while J-Jay Alejandro and Mario Bonleon nailed 14 and 13 points, respectively as Team Pilipinas gained tremendous momentum entering their showdown with 2008 runner-up Kazakhstan today and two-time champion Iran tomorrow.
Joining the Filipinos as opening-day winners are fancied Lebanon, which escaped India, 65-61; reigning champion China, which trampled Hong Kong, 153-47; Korea, which humiliated Japan, 91-69; and Syria, which defeated Singapore, 78-47.
The Nationals are looking to improve their fifth place finish the last time in Sana’A, Yemen and this tournament would serve as their gateway to the 2013 Fiba World U19 Championship in Prague, Czech Republic.
And against the Arabs, the Nationals were impressive.
Trailing behind by one in the first three minutes, 11-12, the Nationals unloaded a 12-0 bomb to close the opening period with an 11-point edge, 23-12.
