Her seat of power

In Nora Aunor’s current state of mind, her star value is not a top priority.
“Kanya-kanyang opinyon ‘yan. Hindi naman dapat masama ang loob natin dahil wala naman tayong dapat patunayan sa kanila (Everyone is entitled to his own opinion. I have no hard feelings because I do not have anything to prove),’’ opines the actress.
The critically acclaimed star feigned nonchalance over comments regarding the lack of star value and box-office names among the stars of the eight official entries of this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
Aunor heads the cast of Kabisera, which opens on Christmas day, December 25.
Contrary to the comments, Aunor, during her prime, killed one box-office record after another as a result of her bankable loveteam with Tirso Cruz III and her other solo starrers. Critics also failed to notice that Eugene Domingo, lead of another MMFF entry, Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 2: Forever Is Not Enough, is another tried-and-tested box-office draw with hits like the first Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank and the Kimmy Dora franchise.
Now that Aunor is past the box-office issues, she is much more focused on another starrer that would show this generation why she is considered an acting gem.
Kabisera, tells film producer and star RJ Agustin, is both a figurative and literal title of the film. A kabisera is the seat that is placed at the long end of a table, usually where the head of the family sits.
As most kabiseras are occupied by a father figure, the film will see why Nora Aunor’s character is forced to take this seat.
Real Florido, co-director of the film alongside veteran director Boy San Agustin, said that Mercy (Aunor) would have to deal with her “perfect” family shattering.
She and husband played by Ricky Davao play doting parents to their kids. They seem to be a perfect family blessed with good kids played by Jason Abalos, JC de Vera, RJ Agustin and Alex San Agustin. Their “perfect” world is torn apart when, one night, hooded men entered their house and tragedy occurs. Slowly, her family falls apart, with some of her children appearing not able to cope with the tragedy that falls on their family.
The film was intended to be part of last year’s MMFF edition. But the producers see it as a blessing in disguise that they were not able to make it last year.
It also stars Menggie Cobbarubias, Perla Bautista, Victor Neri, Ronwaldo Martin, Karl Medina and Ces Quesada.

Beep card launches first retail partnership

Friday, 16 December 2016 00:00 Published in Life Style

Two months after AF Payments Inc. hinted that they were considering a partnership with a convenience store chain, Beep card’s proponent announced its partnership with Japanese chain Family Mart.

This is the first retail partnership for Beep after it was first offered as the modernized and cashless payment method for the three elevated railway systems in Metro Manila (LRT1, LRT2 and MRT3) in 2015.
Users of the tap-and-go card can now use it not just to reload, but to purchase items from over 80 stores in the metro. These items can range from classic food favorites such as their fried chicken meals or the newest addition to their selections. The new selections include Rice-in-a-Box Line such as yang chow fried rice; fresh fried lumpiang shanghai; solo pizzas; the donburi range featuring beef caldereta, pork binagoongan and chicken galantina, and new dessert cups featuring Mango Graham and Banoffee variants.
Peter Maher, AF Payments Inc. president and CEO, said during the recent launch that the partnership is one of their continuous innovation at making the beep card more accessible, convenient and easy-to-use.
Maher said their continuous efforts at striking partnerships could only mean more growth for the cashless payment system that they are establishing for the public. It may not be yet at par with other cashless systems, notably Hong Kong’s famous Octopus Card, which can be used for public transport and retail outlets such as convenience stores, fastfoods and supermarkets, but beep card can become “Manila’s version of HK’s Octopus card.”
Currently, Beep cards can be used for the three train systems, as well as select bus lines and routes, such as the Frolich buses, HM Transport Airport Loop buses, select City Link routes and BGC buses. It can also be used as payment when passing by Cavitex.
There are currently over 2.5 million Beep cards in circulation. The Beep card can be purchased for P20, is reloadable up to P10,000, and is valid for four years.

More information may be obtained at the Web site and on Facebook (beepcard) and Twitter (@beep_card).

Organizers of the 2016 Miss Universe pageant held a grand kickoff event last Saturday night at the S Maison Mall, Conrad Hotel in Pasay City.
Candidates from different parts of the globe were flown in to grace the festivities as well as participate in the pre-pageant activities that include visits to top destinations in the country during their five-day stay.
The candidates introduced during the event were Miss Australia Caris Emily Tiivel, Miss Indonesia Kezia Roslin Warouw, Miss Japan SariNakazawa, Miss Korea Jenny Kim, Miss Malaysia Kiran Jassal, Miss Myanmar Htet Htet Htun, Miss New Zealand Tania Pauline Dawson, Miss Thailand Chalita Suansane, Miss USA Deshauna Barber, and Miss Vietnam Dang Thi Le Hang. Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina was also present and will be joining the activities.

Miss Universe Organization president Paula Mary Shugart, who was warmly welcomed by fans who screamed her name at every opportunity during the event, said it was the organization’s as well as her dream to hold the pageant next year in the country.
The Philippines was host to Miss Universe pageants in 1974 and 1994.
She was also given a jacket with the words “Miss U Is On” by LCS Group chairman and former Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson.
Singson’s LCS Group and Solar Entertainment Corporation organized the event.
Department of Tourism (DoT) Secretary Wanda Teo shared that the ladies’ itinerary include a tour of the Walled City in Intramuros and whaleshark or “butanding” interaction in Oslob, Cebu. The ladies were in top surfing destination, Siargao, yesterday.
Reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach was also present to welcome the candidates. She also shared how excited she was for next year’s pageant.
“It’s not only a dream of Paula’s, a dream of the Miss Universe Organization, but also a dream of mine to bring back the competition here, and to show the world how beautiful the Philippines is. And it would really be great if I can finally have a proper walk on stage in no less than in my home country of course,”’ she said.
Wurtzbach was unable to do the customary victory walk after the mishap that host Steve Harvey caused in last year’s pageant when he announced that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez was the winner instead of Wurtzbach.
Also present during the kickoff were DoT Undersecretary Kat de Castro, Albay Rep. Joey Salceda and partners from Okada Manila, SM Lifestyle Entertainment, Philippine Airlines and Pay It Forward.
The event was hosted by Miss Universe finalist Shamcey Supsup-Lee and actor Benjamin Alves.
Over 90 candidates are set to vie for the crown during the pageant night to be held on Jan. 30, 2017 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
