Career coach and licensed psychologist writes roadmap for corporate career success

“I deal with people who are a little bit unsure of how to go forward with their career. Maybe the/re feeling a little stuck and they want to achieve certain things - whether to get promoted, move jobs, learn something new, or get more rewards. Or sometimes they want to change careers but they’re not sure what it is they want to do,” Malou Trenas-Del Castillo explains what she does as a career coach. “We figure out what you do best, what environment is best for you, and how to go after it”.
Career coaching appointments usually run for about an hour. The number of sessions required varies per person.
“Sometimes if the person is very ready, we figure it out quickly and in four sessions, we’re done. And then they go forward, straight ahead. But it’s also very typical that they can be afraid. They get worried and scared about security specially when they have a lot of dependents. Sometimes it takes a little more time,” says Trenas-Del Castillo.
For those who are unable to see her for one-on-one consultations, she recommends The Career Roadmap: Your Personal Guide to Corporate Career Success, a book she wrote so she can reach out and share her knowledge with more people. It covers the entire life cycle of careers, from finding work all the way to exiting it. Aside from advice and anecdotes, there is a worksheet portion for most sections.
The 140-page easy read is divided into four parts. The first one helps you find your purpose and figure out what you’d like to do.
“Much confusion, dissatisfaction, and restlessness comes from employees who are unsure what type of job they really want, and what their goals are. The book helps them identify what is really important to them so they can find the best job that they can stick to,” elaborates Trenas-Del Castillo.
Next comes the practical side of going after the dream job where she shares real relevant tips about job search, how to make an impact on resume, how to do well in interviews, and then how to negotiate.
“These are practical tips that many of us are not aware of especially if we’ve been in a job for a very long time.” After that, Trenas-Del Castillo discusses managing corporate life and its different aspects like trying to fit it, playing office politics, and getting promoted, among others. The last part is about resignations or getting redundated.
“I’ve had a lot of clients who found even better jobs after they are affected by involuntary separation,” discloses Trenas-Del Castillo who finds fulfillment in providing guidance so people’s lives will improve.
Also a licensed psychologist, Trenas-Del Castillo works with those struggling with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or sometimes some psychosis or trauma. She emphasizes that her counseling room is a safe place where her clients can share what they think, feel, and need. “I help them get to the root of their condition, cope with it, and heal. There is no judgement in the counseling room, only acceptance,” she promises.
