Philippine edition of launched

By Pauline Songco, Staff Writer
Following the return of ESPN to the Philippines last October, the collaboration between local television network TV5 and said international sports channel deepens with the launch of the local edition of and subscription streaming service ESPN Player.
Filipino fans will have an exciting digital gateway for all the latest news coverage, scores and highlights in the sporting scene all around the world, anytime and anywhere. will bring fans closer to the games, leagues and the most loved athletes by offering comprehensive coverage of local and global sports including PBA, NBA, NFL, Volleyball, soccer, tennis, eSports and more.
“People knew of our move toward focusing more on sports and news. When we announced our partnership with ESPN, this was part of our plan — transitioning and transforming the network 360 degrees, not only on television,” said Vincent “Chot” Reyes, president of TV5.
Driven by a similar obsession with sports, ESPN 5’s digital leadership continues to be cultivated with the upcoming launch of the ESPN app later this year, a one-stop destination for sports news and features.
Reyes says, “This is going to be our online portal. Like we said, we are transitioning from just being a TV network to being all over, online, on air and on ground. This is part of continuing the things that we are doing since we announced the partnership last October.”
The ESPN Player, a subscription sports streaming service, will offer live and on demand sports coverage including NCAA College Sports such as Lacrosse, Football, Volleyball, X Game Aspen, X Games Norway, X Games Minneapolis, X Games Sydney and IndyCar, which is an open wheel racing in North America.
ESPN player  promotional codes with 12-month access will be bundled  with selected  SMART Postpaid plans (including iPhone Plans),  and later to Smart Prepaid and Smart Bro. The ESPN Player is compatible with the Apple TV though AirPlay and ChromeCast  with a monthly recurring pass at P99 per month. Devices supported include mobile, desktop and tablet.
The Filipino audiences’ reception to ESPN 5 has been very positive, shares Reyes. “The feedback we’ve gotten is very positive. In terms of the audience, I think it’s pretty clear that we were doing less and less of the entertainment programs. It’s a growing market and we’ve gotten positive reviews from it. We tried the NFL and we tried the US NCAA. That’s been doing very well in that sense. We still have our news and public affairs program. It’s not appealing to the general entertainment audience, but to the audience that we wanted to talk to or targeting has been very positive.”
Reyes also speaks highly of the network’s engagement efforts in bringing the best of the sports industry closer to Filipinos.
“We hope to capture what the audience is looking for — something different than what the other networks are doing. They are good at what they are doing. We need to find our strength and I think this is our strength,” he mentioned.
