Serbian architects hold master class, workshops on interdisciplinary collaboration

Two architects from the University of Novi Sad (UNS), the second largest state university in Serbia, spearheaded a week-long master class on interdisciplinary creative practices in “Urban Exploration: Seizing the Emptiness” (URBEX).
Architects Miljana Zekoviæ and Višnja Žugiæ, assisted by De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Theater Arts faculty Eric dela Cruz, lectured select faculty and students from the college’s Design Foundation, Theater Arts, Production Design, Interior Design, and Architecture programs.
As a researcher, Zekoviæ’s vision was to explore the potentials of the participants by setting new standards in mutual understanding and collaborations. Trending methods in spatial design were introduced, as well as the concepts of narrative embodiment and de-layering, along with the creative practical application of methods in a real site-based event.
Zekoviæ shared how the process has personally affected her work: “It had a huge impact on both our architectural and educational practices and have helped us in embracing the idea of space as a protagonist in all our creative endeavors.”
The teams of faculty and students were given five days to prepare for Shalimar Sessions, where they unveiled the output of their creative interactions. The event involved presentations of art pieces, performances, interactive movements, and sounds created using materials, ranging from old metal sticks, chairs, and water containers, sourced from the abandoned Shalimar building near the campus.
“Altogether it created this complex site-specific system. We were trying to understand how a conventional facility like this became a generator of artistic content and how it became a performer itself.” Zekoviæ continued.
“Everything that you have seen, all the images, every object, all the materials that we used, every sound, every movement, came from this space,” Žugiæ explained.
