Stars’ secret to selfie-worthy skin

In this age of selfies, it is more important than ever to have photo-worthy skin — beauty app or no.
The good news is that a prestige global beauty brand that empowers every woman to express and embrace individual beauty is in stores in Manila. With its well-known collection of innovative makeup, skincare, body, bath and fragrance products, the Laura Mercier brand makes a fresh pitch for the flawless face.
The real Laura Mercier, raised in France, actually attended college as a painter at the age of 17. She became curious about how she could paint a flawless canvass in terms of the face. This led her to decide to take up makeup artistry before flying to New York to start American Elle and her publication career in several magazines, namely, Allure, Vanity Fair, Glamour, W, Harpers Bazaar, InStyle and Vogue. By 1996, she was already renowned as one of the best makeup artists in the industry, thus, the birth of her brand, Laura Mercier.
Mayel Bautista, brand manager for Laura Mercier, says, “If other brands focus on co-lors or trends, Laura is more on the French aesthetic. So, it is more on classic beauty, timeless, not missing out on trends. She was really known for creating the flawless face through the steps of creating flawless makeup.”
Out of all the other brands, Laura Mercier still manages to make a name in the industry. Bautista continues, “I think it’s because Laura stays true to its core. We weren’t pressured to go with the trends, but we have focused on what we are known for, which is the flawless face and the timeless beauty classic. In Laura, we have a saying, that flawless has many faces. We really don’t change the appearance of one person; rather, we enhance it. So we don’t cover it, but we really beautify it.”
Laura Mercier as a brand has established a name in the realm of artistry. “Everything is getting exciting and bigger so more collections are really focused on our core and we have more trainings abroad to hone our skilled ar-tists. Everything’s going fluid now and bigger,” adds Bautista.
As a sought-after makeup artist, Laura has worked with popular icons such as Madonna, Catherine Zeta Jones, Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Meg Ryan, Celine Dion and with the world’s most influential photographers Steven Meisel, Irving Penn, Gilles Bensimon and Patrick Demarchelier while continually contri-buting to high-profile fashion and beauty magazines.
Grounded in Laura’s philosophy, the brand is all about women empowerment or feeling good about yourself. For example, Laura says if you’re having a bad day, just swipe on a good lipstick and it could change your mood instantly.
Bautista explains, “We want to educate women also that makeup is not about changing one’s look, but enhancing one’s look. We want everyone to enhance their uniqueness because what makes you unique makes you beautiful.”
