Firefalldown blazes Filipino trail

08/15/2008

London punk rockers Firefalldown begin a whirlwind two-week tour of their native Philippines in mid-August.

The three-piece band will be playing in eight venues as part of a promotional tour for their new EP Dying To See, mixed by Chris Sheldon of Radiohead and Foo Fighters fame. For two of the band members, Jon Blaylock and Joel Sablayan, the tour will be a homecoming of sorts after leaving the Philippines for the bright lights of London in 2001. A digital single, “Commissioned,” will be released in September with a UK tour planned for October and November. The band will also be shooting their music video during the tour, to be directed by Pancho Esguerra.

Playing together for about a year now, Firefalldown’s main influences include bands like P.O.T., Incubus, Tower of Power, NOFX, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jimmy Eat World. The resulting music is a mixture of punk rock, funk, hardcore and soul. Though most of the lyrics are sung in English, many songs have Filipino lines interspersed throughout choruses and bridges.

The band strives to bring a sense of calling, destiny and conscience through their music. Common lyrical themes involve passion, faith and surrender, as well as real life struggles facing our generation. For example, the song “Stacy” tells the metaphorical story of a lover who slowly dismantles a person’s dreams, with the lover symbolizing the drug addiction that once controlled the lead singer’s life.
