PETA Theater Center: An art space for all
12/01/2008 The PETA Theater Center has been the new home of the Philippine Theater Educational Association since it’s inauguration in 2006. A far cry from the historic ruins of Fort Santiago, which first served as the stage for earlier PETA productions, the new PETA Theater Center exudes contemporary elegance and style. Designed by no less than the architectural and design firm of the late National Artist Leandro Locsin, the building easily became one of the landmarks for Philippine theater and justly functioned as a performance and learning space, resource center, as well as a junction for cultural exchange, and the central venue of PETA workshops, festivals and local and international cultural events. Although more known for its theater performances and workshops, the PETA Theater Center also functions as an art and events space. Many organizations and private individuals have used the different venues of the Theater Center for their events: Corporate meetings, international and local conferences, concerts and even for film and commercial shoots as well as wedding and party receptions. With the different venues of the Theater Center to cater to every client’s various needs, the Theater Center provides the public a glimpse of a world-class theater experience. PETA-Phinma Theater resembles an arena that enables the audience to have an intimate and up-close experience of the stage, and allows the user a smooth flow of movement. The PLDT/Smart Exhibition Hall is an extremely flexible hall that features moveable wall and floor-mounted panels, a suspended steel grid on a high ceiling for equipment, décor and art pieces. The venue can be used for social gatherings, rehearsals, performances, workshops and many others. The Lino Brocka Hall is a multi-functional hall in memory of National Artist Lino Brocka. The space is mostly used to accommodate special gatherings, exhibits, rehearsals and performances. The space spills into an exterior balcony, overlooking the open street. The studios (Studio A and B) are bright, refreshing and creative learning spaces often used as a space for workshops, rehearsals, conferences, exhibits and the like. The roof deck features an urban garden camouflaging its Open Air Theater. It has been a venue for PETA events, rehearsal space and parties. It also offers guests a view over the city and comes complete with a kitchen, making it the ideal place for small-scale private entertaining. An architectural landmark and a venue for cultural and artistic exchange, the PETA Theater Center will certainly be a continuing legacy in the Philippine arts and a place designed to offer a unique theater experience.
