Korean artists perform at CCP

Outstanding Korean artists, Jae-joon Lee and soprano Yun-kyoung Yi, perform at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in a special concert with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) in the third concert of its 27th season slated for Nov. 12 at the CCP’s Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater) at 8 p.m. Also featured are noted Filipino artists, baritone Noel Azcona and tenor Randy Gilongo.

The program includes Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, Op. 9, Delibes’ Les Filles de Cadix, Verdi’s “Tutte le feste al tempio-Piangi” from Rigoletto, Giordano’s “Come un bel di di maggio” from Andrea Chenier, Verdi’s “E strano!...Sempre libera” from La Traviata and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88 The English.

Maestro Jae-joon Lee obtained his master of music from Keimyung University majoring in instrumental music and his master’s degree in choral conducting at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He also received a master’s degree in orchestral and opera conducting at Novosibirsk National Music Conservatory, Russia. Maestro Lee led the Pilgrim Mission Choir to the 2002 Second World Choir Olympics and to the Third World Choir Olympics held in Bremen, Germany, which won successively in the Musica Sacra Acapella category. In 2000, Maestro Lee founded the Gala Orchestra in Korea. Maestro Lee was appointed artistic director of the Daegu International Choir Festival in 2004. The following year, he became the international music director for the 22nd International Theater Festival in Havana, and at the Tongyeong International Music Festival to conduct Mozart’s Requiem in commemoration of the 250th birth anniversary of Mozart. Currently, Maestro Lee is the artistic director of The Gala Orchestra, Deagu Genius Youth Orchestra, Pilgrim Mission Music Center, Yenoeul Music Center and artistic director of the Daegu Educational Institute for Art-gifted students. He is also a visiting professor of the UST Conservatory of Music in Manila.

Yun-Kyoung Yi graduated from Keimyung University, majoring in voice, Korea. She earned her diploma from Arena Academia and AIDM Academia in Italy. She was soloist in various opera performances such as Don Carlo, La Traviata, Lucia di Lammermoor, L’elisir d’amore and Messiah (US), among others. She won several awards at various competitions such as the Daegu-city Board of Education Concours (special prize), Gotaeguk Voice Concours (grand prix), the National Voices Concours (best prize), the Jungang Music Concours, the National Suri Music Concours (second prize), finalist of De Nardis, Italy and at the Bellini international Concours, Italy (second prize).

A native of Iloilo City, Noel Azcona has conducted some major choral works such as Charles Gounod’s Messe Solenelle and Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem Mass in the production of the Iloilo Arts Council. He performed at the Best of the Philippines National Concert Series in Tuguegarao City, Science City of Muñoz and Virac, Catanduanes, with acclaimed pianist Najib Ismail. In 2003, he performed at Singapore’s Esplanade Concert Hall’s “Voices of Light” under Maestro Lim Yau. He was soloist in various opera concerts such as the 2003 Carmina Burana with PPO and Ballet Philippines, the 2004 Christmas concert of Bach’s Magnificat, Philippine Opera Company’s production of Opera Now, the 28th and 31st Las Piñas International Bamboo Organ Festival and at the UST’s production of Eugene Onegin. In 2003, he made his international operatic debut in Japan in a supporting role of Fr. Manuel Maramba’s Lord Takayama Ukon. He also collaborated with Filipino international artists such as Gilopez and Corazon Kabayao, Otoniel Gonzaga, Oscar Yatco and Eleanor Calbes, among others.

One of the country’s outstanding tenors today, Randy Gilongo finished his bachelor of music degree at the UST Conservatory of Music and earned his master of music degree in vocal performance at the Elisabeth University of Music in Hiroshima, Japan under Kyoko Hirata and Uwe Heilman. While in Japan, Gilongo won the grand prize of the Asahi Music Awards, a competition of all international music students in Japan. At the CCP, he was featured soloist of the 19th Filipino Artists Series, Virtuosos 2008 and in the PPO Series. His operatic roles include Ferrando in Mozart’s Cossi fan tutte, Spoletta in Puccini’s Tosca and a handful of leading roles in Fr. Maramba’s operas. He has also essayed the role of Lensky in Tchaikowsky’s Eugene Onegin and Eisenstein in Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, both of which were productions of the UST Conservatory of Music performed at the CCP Main Theater. He also attended the master classes of Edith Mathis, Dalton Baldwin in Japan, opera coaching with Marcella Reale and Norman Shelter at the Summer Academy at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. At present, Gilongo is in the faculty of the UST Conservatory of Music Voice Department.
