Police seize abortion medicines in Quiapo

10/05/2008

Due to rising number of fetuses found in the city of Manila in the past weeks, the Manila Police District (MPD) launched yesterday its intensified campaign against illegal vendors selling abortion medicines and herbal medicinal plants near the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene known as the Quiapo Church.

Supt. Romulo Sapitula, commander of MPD Station 3, said the successive raids conducted in the vicinity of Quiapo Church led to the seizure of abortion medicines, 185 bottles of herbal medicines.

The drive was conducted following the request of the Quiapo parochial church and religious groups and reports of rampant selling of abortion medicines in the vicinity.

Sapitula warned the vendors against selling abortion medicines and herbs, saying this was only the start of their relentless drive.

As part of the drive, Sapitula tapped the services of several civilian volunteers who formed part of the monitoring team in the area.

“The civilian volunteers will serve as our watchdogs. They will report to authorities regarding the activities of the illegal vendors in the area,” he said. PNA
