Parañaque steps up campaign vs ‘double dead’ meat
11/23/2008 The Parañaque City government in its effort to protect the consumers, is strictly implementing all measures to the stop entry of “double dead” meat in its city markets especially during the Christmas rush. City Special Services Officer-in-charge Dean Calleja, in a meeting with Agriculture Division personnel, ordered a tightened watch against double-dead hog and cow meat as the slaughter, transport, sale and consumption thereof can bring about health problems to humans by passing on diseases. Calleja said the Parañaque government and local meat dealers have worked hard to attain its FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease)-free status and would not want to have that compromised. To prepare for the task, City chief Agriculturist and local meat inspection team leader Fe Ferolino underwent a one and a half-month accreditation seminar at the National Meat Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture. She said the Agricultural Division now handles the inspection of livestock and fowl meat. “So far we have not encountered any hot meat but just the same, we are keeping all our systems up for the proper screening of agricultural produce, especially meat that are coming in as well as those that are on sale,” Ferolino said. Ferolino assured that meat inspectors have been regularly conducting sorties in both public and private markets, examining the veterinary health certificates of slaughtered animals and conducting examinations on meat, organs and parts that are being sold. She further reminded meat dealers of the policy banning the slaughter of livestock in their backyard, even if the meat is intended to be consumed by their family. The prohibition also applies to peddling the meat. Pat C. Santos Back to top
