‘Recom’ calls on Pinoys to unite amid economic crisis

12/01/2008

Caloocan City Mayor Enrico “Recom” Echiverri yesterday called for a revolution for unity to help the nation weather the occurring global economic crisis during the commemoration of the 145th birth anniversary of the Great Plebian, Andres Bonifacio, at the Monumento Circle.

In his speech, Echiverri underscored the importance of being a nation united amid the worldwide economic slump.

“As our hero Gat Andres Bonifacio started a revolution for freedom, we are now starting a revolution for unity for the sake of our country’s future. Only through unity can we achieve a lasting freedom from poverty,” the mayor emphasized.

He also called on his fellow public servants to set aside political bickering and put the nation’s welfare on top priority, citing the 2010 elections are still more than a year away yet.

“The elections will still be held in 2010, and although our country has not been severely affected by the crisis, it faces serious threats brought about by global economic uncertainties,” he said.

“We must heal the wounds created by every politician’s own vested interest and begin a reconciling process of reformation bolstered by socio-economic and political projects,” Echiverri added.

He also urged the people to be responsible for themselves as it is they who are molding their lives and the future of their respective families.

“The true spirit of heroism is in ourselves. We should not blame the government for what is happening to us. We should be responsible for ourselves. I want you all to belong to a responsible community,” Echiverri said.

Meanwhile, some 100 elected officials of Caloocan City, headed by Councilor Ricojudge Janvier “RJ” Echiverri and Milagros “Rose” Mercado took their oath as new enlisted members of the Philippine Army reserve force.

In a simple ceremony coinciding with the 75th anniversary of Bonifacio’s monument itself, Echiverri and Brig. Gen. Danilo Garcia, commanding general of the Army Reserve Command, administered the oath of enlistment.

Echiverri, who holds the reservist rank of lieutenant colonel himself, cited the continued commitment Army Reserve soldiers play in nation building and participation in socio-economic development efforts,

A reservists in the military are members of the military’s reserve force. They are civilians and in peacetime have careers outside the military.

Some of the reservists hold positions either in the government or private companies. To them, being reservists is a plus point and consider it not a hindrance to their normal jobs.

They enlist as reservists as they are willing to serve and protect the people, especially during periods of calamities.
