PNP assures mall goers of safety on holidays

11/09/2009

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has assured the public of safety when going to shopping malls and other establishments, saying security measures and procedures have been established.

The National Capital Regional Police Office (NCRPO) and security officers and mall administrators have agreed and discussed the issues during the security symposium last Oct. 21.

The different district officers in Metro Manila have started their security drills with mall security guards to improve response during incidents such as armed robbery, shooting, hostage-taking and other crime incidents.

NCRPO Director Roberto Rosales observed the Field Training Exercise conducted by the Manila Police District at 7 a.m. last Nov. 6 at the Robinsons Place in Ermita, Manila.

He recommended some further improvements, particularly on the physical deployment of patrol and traffic personnel around the malls and on the reporting of incidents to the police.

A bystander in the area who thought the exercise was real called up the emergency number of the police. Elements of MPD Police Station 5 immediately responded.

Rosales praised the action of the bystander and the police. He said the spontaneous action of the person who reported the incident and the immediate response of the police proved the present system of the police in terms of receiving reports and coming up with the corresponding deployment is working well.

At the Eastern Police District, the deputy regional director for operation of NCRPO, Chief Supt. Jose Arne de los Santos, and the district director, Chief Supt. Benjardi Mantele, supervised the security drill at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

The simulation exercise showed the effectiveness of the response of the police during emergency situation.

The Southern Police District conducted similar simulation exercise at the Victory Mall in Caloocan City by the Northern Police District and at the SM Mall Of Asia in Pasay City.

According to Rosales, the exercises are just a start of the series of drills that NCRPO will undertake with security officers and administrators at all shopping malls, big commercial establishments, transport terminals and other places of convergence. Gina Peralta-Elorde
