Erap pro-poor projects benefit 2,585 indigents

Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada’s project for the poor and indigent called “Damayan ng Maynila- Burial Assistance” which started on Nov. 22, 2016 has benefited 2,585 indigents, according to a report submitted by the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW).
Ms. Nanet Tayag, MDSW officer-in-charge, said Estrada initiated the “Damayan” One-Stop-Shop assistance for indigent Manileños to unburden poor city residents of the big costs of burying their dead loved ones by offering Free Burial Assistance and Financial Assistance.
“Ayaw nating mahirapan pa ang mga walang-wala na kung saan pa nila kukuhanin ang mabigat na gastusin sa pagpapalibing sa kanilang namatay na mahal sa buhay, that’s why we introduce the “Damayan.” We know how hard up they are so we want to help them,” Estrada said.
Tayag added since the day Damayan has started, the program has already assisted 2,585 clients up to present.
These include the services of Free Burial or Paupers, financial assistance, groceries, discount in funeral services, discount in apartments or Cluster in North and South Cemetery and endorsement for financial assistance to national agencies like DSWD-NCR and Office of the VicePresident Leny Robredo.
Estrada said there are 525 beneficiaries of “Damayan” who has received burial financial assistance worth P3,000 and groceries from MDSW since November 2016.
MDSW report shows as of January 2018 about 1,073 clients had already received their burial financial assistance.
Last February 27, another 100 beneficiares were given financial assistance and groceries at Bulwagang Villegas.
“In our culture, respect for the dead and the spirit of sharing and helping one another is a tradition. Kaya dito sa Maynila, ang walang-wala ay may gobyernong tutulong… may dadamay, may palaging karamay,” Estrada said.
